Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's recent appointment of a Christian as a new defense minister -- a precedent in the predominantly-Muslim Arab country - has been viewed by political analysts as a preemptive move to rally Christian and Druze minorities in the ongoing fight against mainly Sunni opposition groups seeking to topple his authoritarian regime. The embattled president's decision came at the peak of his government's violent crackdown on pro-democracy protesters demanding a regime change. It also came as Assad was coming under heavy Arab, regional and international pressures to stop the crackdown on protesters. As the popular uprising, which began in mid-March, widened engulfing most Syrian cities and towns and posing the most serious threat to his 11-year rule, Assad's replacement of the defense minister was his latest in a series of measures aimed at crushing the revolt. He ordered a new government in April after the former prime minister quit and has sacked several provincial governors, including those of the flashpoint provinces of Hama, Homs and Deir al-Zour, all mainly Sunni areas that have suffered the brunt of civilian casualties as a result of the excessive use of military force against the protesters.
